Nel 1592 era già un commediografo di successo. Quando la peste chiuse i teatri di londra, Shakespeare iniziò a scrivere i suoi famosi sonetti. Il suo patrono era il conte di Southampton. Dopo La peste, Shakespeare divenne un membro guida della compagnia teatrale. Più tardi divenne membro del sindacato e costruì il famoso Globe Theatre. Shakespeare morì nel 1616 e fu seppellito nella chiesa di Stratford.
Solo metà delle opere di Shakespeare apparvero stampate. Fu solo nel 1623 ( dopo la sua morte) che due attori e amici di Shakespeare decisero di pubblicare una collezione delle sue opere. Le opere erano raggruppate in commedie, storie e tragedie e le date delle opere sono difficili da stabilire. Quando il padre di Amleto muore, la madre di Amleto, Gertrude, sposa il fratello del re morto, Claudio che prende il trono. Amleto incontra il fantasma del padre che gli dice che è stato asassinato d Claudio. Amleto allora decide di vendicarlo. Amleto Fa finta di essere pazzo e rigetta l’amore di Ofelia. Per provare che suo padre è stato assassinato chiede ad un gruppo di attori di mettere in scena “ The murder of gonzago” per vedere la reazione di Claudio. Durante la scena dell’assassinio Claudio esce dalla stanza, allora Amleto accusa la madre di aver tradito la memoria del padre sposando Claudio. Durante questa scena egli sente un rumore dietro una tenda e ammazza l’intruso, pensando che fosse claudio, ma in realtà era Polonio. Amleto viene mandato in inghilterra ma Amleto riesce a scappare e ritornare in Danimarca. Durante la sua assenza, Ofelia annega. Di ritorno dalla francia il fratello Laerte decide di vendicarla. Claudio allora mette su un duello tra i due e da a laerte una spada dalla punta avvelenata. Ma il suo progetto fallisce e sia Amleto e sia Laerte vengono feriti dalla stessa spada. Alla fine Amleto riesce ad uccidere suo zio claudio.
Nella sua origine, Amleto è una storia di vendetta che risale ai primi anni del medioevo. Tra gli altri temi dell’opera vi sono il potere, l’onore, il dubbio , la morte , la natura degli esseri umani. La causa della contaminazione è il veleno con il quale claudio ha probabilmente ammazzato il padre di amleto, e che alla fine dell’opera ammazzerà Laerte, Amleto la regina e il re. Il veleno rappresenta le forze del male in generale. Amleto è una figura radicalmente isolata, tagliato fuori dalla società. Con Amleto, Shakspeare inventa un personaggio che è libero di decidere per se stesso ma le sue azioni provocano una catena di conseguenze tragiche.
