GUY FAWKES and BONFIRE NIGHT.
The tradition of Guy Fawkes and bonfires started in 16'5 when Guy Fawkes's plot against King James I was discovered in the night between the 4th and 5th of November.
Already on the 5th, when Londoners knew(seppero) that their King was saved, they lit(accesero) bonfires in thanksgiving. As years progressed, however, the ritual was more elaborate and people started placing effigies(effigi) of Guy Fawkes and even those of contemporary politicians on bonfires; then they added fireworks to the celebrations.
Last week I and my schoolmates prepared a dummy(manichino) of Guy Fawkes, which is usually called "the Guy", for Bonfire Night celebrations. On the 5th of November we walked in the streets of our town, carried "our Guy"and begged passers-by for "a penny for the Guy".
Then we used the money to buy fireworks for the evening's festivities.
In the evening, we placed Guy on top of the bonfire, and we set it alight(lo abbiamo acceso); fireworks filled the sky.
Bonfire Night is not only celebrated in Britain.
The tradition crossed the oceand and established itself in the British colonies during the centuries.
Today, November 5th bonfires still light faraway places like New Zealand and Newfoundland in Canada.
