Differenza tra l'infinito con il TO e ING. (Inglese)

Ciao a tutti. Non riesco a capire una cosa. ES: Hanno dovuto lasciare quella casa. (è un esempio qualsasi). Come faccio a capire se il verbo (in questo caso lasciare) lo devo mettere con il to (quindi TO LEAVE) o la forma in ing(LEAVING). cè, entrambi hanno il significato di LASCI-ARE. all'infinito.
