This is a long , explosive eruption that creates high-altitude column of volcanic material and covers large areas with ash . The pine tree effect , described in Pliny's letter , is called a Plinian column . The driving force behind all of this activity is volcanic gas , which pushes hot , molten material frow below the earth's surface out of the mountain . What we see first are large clouds of smoke and ash. However , Pompeii was not destroyed because of ash and dust . In fact , human remains found above the ash layers show that people went back to their homes after the ash had stopped falling . Because they did not understand how to survive in such situation , people unknowingly placed themselves and their children in the path of death . Total annihilation occurred hours later , when Vesuvius became pyroclastic . A pyroclastic flow can bury surrounding areas , turning beautiful lakes and forests into a moonscape . A pyroclastic flow first moves into valleys and river beds . At the bottom of the volcano , it can sweep away or bury anything in its path , including populated areas . Nothing standing in its wall will survive . This is what happened to Pompeii . The death toll , in Pompeii and sll nearby towns , was about 16,000 . It was one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions of all time
