Migration has been a constant feauture of human history "homo migrans" has existed ever since "homo sapiens". Historical migration of human populations begins with the movement of homo erectus out of Africa across Eurasia about 1.75 milions years ago.
Homo sapiens moved out of Africa 70,000 years ago, and had spread across Australia, Asia and europe by 40,000 years BC, due to climate change and looking for new sources of food.
Migration to the Americas took place 20,000 to 15,000 years ago, most of the Pacific Island were colonized.
From 728 BC, the Greeks and the Romans began 250 years of expansion settling colonies in several places.
The 13th century was the time of the great Mongol and Turkic migrations across Eurasia. Between the 11th and 18th centuries, there were numerous migrations in Asia.
The Age of Exploration and European colonialism led to an accelared speed of migration since Early Modern times.
In the 19th century, over 50 million people left Europe for the Americas.
Global migrations throughout the 20th century cannot be understood without their links to other mass migrations within and across borders or overseas, linked to processes of urbanization, industrialization and decolonization.
Today, almost 216 million people, or 3,15% of the world population, live outside their country.
Refugees and asylum seekers made up 16,3 million, or 8%, of international migrants in 2015. The Middle-East and North Africa area have the largest share of refugees and asylum seekers among immigrants (65 %) , followed by South Asia (20%), Sub-Saharan Africa (17% ) and East Asia and Pacific (8,8%).
The United Nations Recommendations on Statistics of International Migration, defines an international migrant as any person who changes his country of usual residence. An international migrant who changes his place of usual residence for at least one year is deined as along-term migrant, while a person who changes his place of usual residence for more than three months, but less than one year, is considered to be a short-term migrant.
In several European countries international migrant differs between foreigners originating from European countries, and those originating from other regions. Statistics of migrant inflows and outflows also differ according to the criteria used to identify the country of origin or destination of the migrant.
