It takes its name from the Italian navigator who explodered the coast of the North America.
For centuries million of people have emigrated to New York from Europe in search of a better life. That explains why about forty languages are spoken there! New York, which is also called "The Big Apple", is divided into five districts (also called boroughs): Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.
When we speak of New York we usually refer to Manhattan Island: the very heart of the city with its magnificent skyscrapers. It is the oldest and most important part of the city. Here there are many important avenues that go from north to south (the most important is the Fifth Avenue) and streets that go from east to west. It is home to many of New York's best-known attractions. Here are some of them:
The Statue of Liberty, a large statue in the harbour (=porto) of New York City. It was built in 1886 and given as a gift (=dono) from France ti honour the friendship between the two nations. The Statue of Liberty is 47m. tall and togheter with the pedestal reaches 93m. Made from pure copper, it represents freedom, liberty, justice and the fruendship of foreign nations. Tourists can visit inside of the statue and enjoy a wonderful view of Manhattan.
The Empire Statue of Building, a skyscraper with 102 floors; for forty years it was the tallest building in the world. It is named after the popular niclname for New York, The Empire State. It was completed in 1931 and is one of the most famous landmarks in the USA.
Central Park, a large public, urban park. It is the most visited park in the United States with about twenty-five million visitors annually. It has appeared in many movies and television shows and has become famous.
Times Square, an important centre of entertainment in the City.
New York has many other things to offer tourists; many monuments and the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art which is one of the largest art museums in the world and houses many beatiful art collections! And if you are a sports fan New York is the place for you! There is the Yankess Stadium, home to the baseball team, the US Tennis Open which is held in Queens and many other fantastic sports!

Nonostante ciò non è la capitale degli Stati Uniti. E' un importante centro culturale e finanziario.

Marco, io devo dirti la verità... Non mi piace l'inglese ed anche se lo studio non lo capisco, è più forte di me... Potrei anche non farmelo, ma la professoressa è subito pronta a mandare note a casa, o a prendere provvedimenti, quindi cerco di farmeli, ma non ci riesco per niente...

Scusami, adesso non per dire ma, non provi mai a svolgere gli esercizi di inglese? Sarà il decimo testo (con relative domande) in lingua che chiedi di tradurre. Vanno bene gli aiuti, le spiegazioni, e qualche traduzione già pronta (che io e altre persone ti abbiamo già fornito per altri esercizi), ma chiedere sempre interi esercizi come questo (comprensione, traduzione e risposta alle domande) mi sembra eccessivo. Te lo dico per farti capire che se ti aiutiamo sempre noi poi non arriverai mai a imparare. E se è questione di avere poco tempo cerca di gestirlo in modo da poter dedicare tempo anche all'inglese. Puoi dirmi cosa trovi di difficile in un semplice testo come questo?
