Sachin Tendulkar was today facing the possibility he had played his last international in England after being ruled out of the rest of India's tour due to a toe injury.
Tendulkar saw a specialist today after missing Saturday's rain-affected first one-day international at Chester-le-Street and was prescribed four weeks' rest. The 38-year-old was due to return to India immediately, leaving him stranded on 99 international centuries for his country - the number on which he has remained for the entire tour.
It is not thought that India will call up a replacement for tomorrow's second NatWest Series match here at the Rose Bowl.
Tendulkar's departure is the eighth high-profile injury victim for India on this difficult tour of England, during which they have yet to record a single victory.
Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh all picked up injuries during the Test series, while Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Ishant Sharma had to be withdrawn from the limited-overs matches.
Rohit Sharma also fell by the wayside when he broke the index finger of his right hand after being struck by a short-pitched delivery from Stuart Broad.
If the inaugural World Test Championship Final is held in England in two years' time, Tendulkar might yet have one more appearance for India in this country but as he would be 40, there is no guarantee that the Little Master would be included.
Tendulkar's absence will give England confidence that they can seize the initiative in the second of these five one-day matches. The series stands at 0-0 after rain ensured no result was possible at Durham. The weather forecast is again poor for tomorrow but England batsman Ian Bell hopes it will relent for long enough for him to make an impression at No4.
After a frustrating one-day series at No6 against Sri Lanka, Bell will be promoted again as England have rested Kevin Pietersen - and he is confident the move will enable him to add to his single one-day international hundred to date.
Bell said: "I need to show [coach] Andy Flower that I can put my name up there."
