The United States is a federal republic consisting of 48 continental states and the two outlying states of Alaska and Hawaii for a grand total of 50 plus the federal. The main part of the United States extends from the Atlantic ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. It covers the middle of the North American continent. This area is called "the continental United States". The continental United States is bounded to the north by Canada and to the Sud by Mexico.
The continental states are divided into four time zone from east to west. It is always three hours later on the east coast than it is on the west coast. There are two mountain rangers in the continental United States: the Appalachians in the east and the Rockies in the west. They separate the coastal areas from the heartland of America. The Appalachian mountains are considered a very old mountain chain;the Rocky mountains,by contrast,are considered to be much younger. The muontains that from this range are high and irregular. In the very middle pf the continent is the Mississipi River. Other important rivers are the Rio Grande,the Colorado,the Ohio,the missouri. Along the border with Canada there five big lakes called "the grest lakes". They are Lake MIchigan, lake Superior, lake Huron, lake Eire and lake Ontario. Alaska is separeted from the continent USA by Canada. It is located in the extreme north west of North America betwen the Artic and the Pacific Ocean. It is extremely cold in the winter and there are spectacular glaciers. Hawaii,a chain of island in the Pacific Ocean,is situated in the east centrale Pacific Ocean. It has a tropical climate. It is a big attraction for tourists and it is famous for its active volcanoes.
