FCE: suggestions?
Hi guys!
How are you? I hope everything is fine… This is my first message in the ‘English corner’: I love English – it’s my passion with – of course – maths
. I’ve been studying it for 12-13 years. At the end of this year (at school, I mean: at the beginning of June) I will have the exam for FCE. Of course, I’m attending a course (40 hours) in my school to prepare for the exam: every Thursday afternoon (2 pm - 4 pm) I have English lesson with specific exercises like FCE ones.
These days, I’m reading a lot to improve my vocabulary. What is your opinion? What should I do to improve vocabulary and to increase the number of words I know? Well, I don’t have any particular problems with grammar, but I’m revising it anyway… “Use of English” is quite hard, isn’t it? Have you taken the FCE exam? Have you passed it? Would you mind telling me a bit of your experience?
I would be glad to read your answers. I'm looking forward to hearing from you very soon…
Thank you very much indeed.
Paul

Welcome, pdf
If you want to present yourself, you can do in the section "Presentation".

All right, I'll try again, this time avoiding the "dollar" simbol...
This might sound a weird comment, but if you want to really experience some (American) English, consider taking a short vacation in the US! I know you probably do not spill money from your pockets. However, this is the best time ever for you rich Europeans to come on this side of the Ocean… The Euro is so strong that you will really feel rich! Well, the flight is not cheap, and of course you need at least 10-15 days, but once you are here, everything becomes very cheap. Sure enough, you want to avoid New York and other fancy and expensive places, but in most of the US you can sleep in a motel for 50 dollars per night per four-people room... that’s less than 10 euros each!!! Food?? Grocery stores are much cheaper than in Europe, and in a decent restaurant you can fill yourself with 15 dollars. In a less decent you can eat as much as you can for 10-12 dollars. Yes, as much as you can.

That's extremely kind of you! Well, since I'm quite a bit worried for Use of English test, what do you think of it? Have you got any particular suggestions to pass (with a good result) UOE exam?
Thanks a lot... Paolo
"Paolo90":
Right... since I can't watch English channels on the TV I think I'll use internet... Anyway, thanks a lot for expressing your opinions.
Domè89, what about your FCE exam? May I ask you your opinion concerning the different tests (I mean use of English, Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking)?
Thanks.
Pol

even you don't have a digital decoder, ABCNews is available for free on the internet (maybe also CBS). Anyway, mind that ABCNews journalists have a really different way of speech from the BBC ones.
I wanted to suggest, if you have digital decoder, to watch BBC World ( channel 23/45) to improve your English.
Hy man!!
I love english too!!! I think it's gonna be the future lenguage...
to emprouve ur english vocabulary, I suggest u to watch english TV ( if u can) and listen english radio... (u can find it streaming on internet...)
I've done the FCE, and it's very useful, especially at the uny (u don't need do attend english lesson..)
bye bye!!!

"Camillo":
I suggest you to read some novels in English and also a newspaper which is in general quite difficult to fully understand.
Conversation with people of mother tongue English would be also very useful but probably you do that already at the course you are following.
The most difficult experience I had with English at the beginning was to speak and understand on the telephone..
Good luck for your exam
Many thanks for your message, Camillo. I'm reading a lot of novels in English (I've just finished Wuthering Heights by E. Bronte - in a simpler version! - and now I would like to read A tale of two cities by Dickens: I was given it as a gift...).
I agree with you: the conversation on the telephone is extremely hard...
If I can, I will sometimes write some topics in this section: in this way I can do exercise in writing.
Eventually, thanks a lot for your suggestions.
See you!

Paolo
