Domande di comprensione
Salve a tutti..qualcuno può aiutarmi a rispondere a queste domande di comprensione? E' urgente... perfavore :(
A worthy woman from beside Bath city
was with us, somewhat deaf, which was a pity.
In making cloth she showed so great a bent
she bettered those of Ypres and of Ghent.
In all the parish not a dame dared stir
towards the altar steps in front of her.
And if indeed they did, so wrath was she
as to be quite put out of charity.
Her kerchiefs were of finely woven ground,
I dared have sworn they weighed a good ten pound
the ones she wore on Sunday, on her head.
Her hose were of the finest scarlet red
and gartered tight; her shoes were soft and new.
Bold was her face, handsome and red in hue.
A worthy woman all her life, what's more
she's had five husbands, all at the church door,
apart from other company in youth;
no need just now to speak of that, forsooth.
And she had thrice been to Jerusalem,
seen many strange rivers and passed over them;
she's been to Rome and also to Boulogne,
St James of Compostella and Cologne,
and she was skilled in wandering by th way.
She had gap-teeth, set widely, truth to say.
Easily on an ambling horse she sat
well wimpled up, and on her head a hat
as broad as is a buckler or a shield;
she had a flowing mantle that concealed
large hips, her heels spurred sharply under that,
in company she liked to laugh and chat
and knew the remedies for love's mischances,
an art in which she knew the oldest dances.
1. At the beginning of the extract, Chaucer comments on the Wife of Bath's economic skills, and at the end on her social skills. What were her skills and abilities?
2. What colour is mentioned and associated with this character?
3. Underline all the physical descriptions of the wife. Are they positive or negative?
4. What numbers are mentioned? What do they refer to?
5. The ryme scheme is very regular and precise, AA BB and most words are monosyllabic. What effect does it have in this description of the Wife? Choose from these adjectives: jolly, monotonous, simple, amusing, rounded, clear, easy.
6. Look at your answer to question 2. What do we normally associate with this colour?
7. Chaucer uses exaggeration in his description of the wife. Here are some key words to help you find the exaggerations - first, coverchiefs, numbers, and hat. What effect do these four exaggerated descriptions have on our idea of what the wife of bath was like?
8. There are some examples of irony. How does Chaucer counter the pious image?
Grazie a tutti in anticipo :)

L'ho appena fatto anch'io cahucer in letteratura, quindi ti dico quello che mi ricordo ora!
Alla domanda due: The colour associated with this character. It's because red it's the colour of love, passion and she's a passional woman.
3) The description is with details, it describes her behaviour and her clothes. About the behaviour, we can see she need to be in the middle of the attention when cahucer says that she gets angry when someone walks in the church before she does. And about her appereance we can say a lot of things (trovale).
4)Numbers: three and five. Five refers to her ex husands, and three refers to the number of time she went to Jerusalem.
5) fai tu, è una tua opininione, insomma!
6)Ho già risposto nella SECONDA: We associate love and passion.
7)GIVE YOUR IDEA!!
8)Non la so, mi spiace.
Insomma, dovrai rispondere alle domande 7, 8 e 1 da solo! Io ti ho aiutato come ho potuto! Ciao ((:
