Ebenezer Scrooge is a penny-pinching old man; he cares nothing for the people around him and mankind exists only for the money that can be made through exploitation and intimidation. He particularly detests Christmas which he calls " Humbug " and considers as " a time for finding yourself a year older, and not an hour richer ". On Christmas Eve Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley who died seven Christmas Eves before. Marley hopes to help Scrooge avoid his miserable fate in the afterlife, and warns him that he will be haunted by three spirits. These three spirits, the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, succeed in showing Scrooge the evils of his existence and giving him a chance to change his ways. The old man's trasformation is complete the following Christmas morning: he decides to send a Christmas turkey to his long-suffering clerk, Bob Cratchit, and to spend Christmas day in the company of his nephew, Fred, whom he earlier rejected. Scrooge's new-found redemption continues when he raises Cratchit's salary and vows to assist his family, which includes Bob's cripped son, Tiny Tim.
