Basil chastises Dorian for his influence over these unfortunate youths and urges him to use his considerable sway for good rather than evil. He adds that he wonders if he knows Dorian at all and wishes he were able to see the man’s soul. Dorian laughs bitterly and says that the artist shall have his wish. He promises to show Basil his soul, which, he notes, most people believe only God can see. Basil decries Dorian’s speech as blasphemous, and he begs Dorian to deny the terrible charges that have been made against him. Smiling, Dorian offers to show Basil the diary of his life, which he is certain will answer all of Basil’s questions.

E’ il giorno del suo trentottesimo compleanno e rientrando dalla cena incontra per strada Basilio che non vede da molti anni. Inizialmente fa finta di non averlo riconosciuto ma Basilio lo vede e gli riferisce che stava cercando proprio lui, infatti era restato sino a quell’ora in casa sua ad aspettarlo ma poi si era rassegnato ad andarsene. Il pittore gli riferisce che è in partenza per Parigi (ha il treno alle 11 di sera) dove conta di stabilirsi per i prossimi sei mesi, ma prima di partire vorrebbe parlargli. Entrati in casa Basilio gli riferisce che ha sentito varie dicerie sul suo conto e che si sta preoccupando per lui. Il pittore vuole che Dorian gli dica che non è vero ciò che si dice in giro, che egli non è l’uomo malvagio che viene dipinto da tutti e che induce al peccato tutti i suoi amici. Basilio afferma anche che non può essere così malvagio perché in tal caso il suo aspetto dovrebbe rivelare i segni della corruzione e dei vizi e non si sarebbe potuto conservare così bello. Basilio insiste perché Dorian neghi tutte le accuse che gli vengono rivolte, perché gli dica che non è un corrotto, un infame e un malvagio. Dorian gli risponde che ha un diario in cui annota tutta la sua vita, giorno per giorno e che vuole farglielo vedere.
