Oliver is an orphan who was born and raised until the age of nine years in an orphanage where hungry and suffered abuse by the Director Bumble. Before he was hired in a funeral home but here is treated badly and one day escapes and comes to London, where, however, for simplicity becomes involved with a gang of thieves who lives in the slums of the city and is headed by old Fagin . So the boy begins a life underground and night with Fagin and Dogder, Bates (called the wily), Claypole and especially Nancy, but basically good astray by his lover, the violent Sikes. One day the gang robs Mr. Brownlow and Oliver took the opportunity to leave the group but, after being hosted by the same Brownlow, will recapture the group of thieves. The disturbing and mysterious Monks convinces him to work for him as a thief, but his first shot goes wrong: Oliver is injured and is treated in the home of Mrs. Mayle and adoptive granddaughter Rose. Fagin, with the help of Monks, trying to recover the boy, but the compassionate Nancy Rose warned of the plot. Sikes, Nancy discovered the treachery, and kills her while trying to escape, he dies. The band is broken up by police and eventually discovers that Oliver is the illegitimate brother of Monks and that he wanted to get rid of them for not sharing with him the legacy of his father. At the end of the novel Oliver is adopted by Mr Brownlow. Discovered all the crimes committed, Fagin is arrested and dies after a few days under the gallows. Rose is married to his childhood friend Harry and went to live near Oliver. Monks must unfortunately agree to divide the legacy of his father with Oliver but sperpererà this money back into the world of malafama. Finally, Claypole and Bates get rid of their `` friends `` and shall become a police informant and a major farmer.
