The conflict between the North and the South arose because the economy of the South was based on agricolture and therefore it was in favour of slavery; the economy of the North, o the country, was based on industry and against slavery. When Abraham Lincoln, a Republican and an apponent of slavery, was elected President of the Union South Carolina seceded from the Union followed by ten other souther states and they formed the Confederate States of America.President Lincoln refused to recognize the seccession and the civil war broke out.After many battles with a lot of bloodshed on both sides, the Union forces, led by General Grant,defeated the Confederate army,led by General Lee.The terms of surrender were signed by Grant and Lee on April 9 1865.The war saw the loss of thousands of young men and the destruction of the whole structure of Southern society.The Negroes made a slow transition from the condition of slaves to that of free wage earners and raised serious problems of social relations.
