Una volta decompattato il file zip, come dici tu correttamente, bisogna "uploadare" il contenuto nello spazio web a disposizione (che deve supportare PHP ed avere un db MySQL o altro a disposizione e che di solito si può manutenere con un programma: nel caso di MySQL, ad esempio, per effettuare operazioni sulle tabelle, si usa PHPMyAdmin).

Per uploadare, si può farlo mediante shell e il file zippato deve essere trasferito come binario, quindi decompattato in una cartella sul server; oppure, come immagino abbia fatto il tuo amico, una volta decompresso il file zippato in una cartella, il contenuto va spostato sul server mediante un client FTP, avendo cura di trasferire in modalità ASCII tutti i file con estensione .php, .inc, .sql, .cfg, .htm and .tpl , mentre i file della grafica in formato binario.
Una volta fatto questo, bisogna puntare il browser su quello spazio, digitando l'URL "http://www.nomeprovider.est/tuospazio/phpbbX" e il resto dovrebbe essere automatico, cioè tutta la fase di configurazione.

Un'ultima cosa...Il fatto che nn veda la pagina web è dovuto al fatto che manca il file index oppure questo è già compreso nel pacchetto?

di solito questi forum hanno una installazione automatizzata.. prova a vedere se nella cartella c'è un file install.php da eseguire la prima volta... e prova a puntare su quell url...

Quello che ti ho fornito non si apre perchè è un esempio della struttura dell'URl; sostituiscilo con il percorso per individuare il file da cui far partire l'installazione, da lì poi configura il forum.

Scusa, forse non sono stato chiaro io nell'esporre: la X nel nome phpbb sta ad indicare la versione se non erro, quindi mi pare che nella versione che avevo provato, la 2, doveva essere "phpbb2".
Con un esempio pratico, se ho uno spazio su Lycos, sarà:

http://utenti.lycos.it/denn/phpbb2/install.php

Dovrebbe essere così, se vuoi avviare il processo di installazione del forum.
Per quanto riguarda i file PHP, sono file di testo, che puoi aprire anche con il Blocco Note; cmq, ne esistono diversi di editor per PHP, tipo Antechinus PHP Editor specifico, oppure puoi usare gli editor di sviluppo web come Dreamweaver

La procedura l'ho capita:basta lanciare nel browser il link che porta al file install.php.Il problema è che nn parte alcun processo di installazione del forum ma piuttosto compare una pagina scritta in linguaggio html(body...).Sarà xkè il server nn supporta il forum?!?!
