La forma passiva del verbo to give si può creare utilizzando sia l'ausiliare "to have", sia "to be". Nel caso della frase in italiano che "il preaidente ha ricevuto", quindi è come se fosse il soggetto dell'azione, colui al quale è stata data la copia del documento; io la rifarei così:
The president was given a copy of the document so that he could check it.
